New Reese Witherspoon Movie ‘WILD’ Shot in Southern Oregon
Residents of Ashland, OR will soon be able to see their beautiful little town on the big screen starting December 5th, 2014. Reese Witherspoon’s newest movie “Wild,” began filming in Ashland and other Southern Oregon landmarks in October 2013. While there was only one full day of shooting in Ashland, the film’s producers shot scenes in the Downtown Plaza, Ashland Post Office, as well as The Breadboard restaurant. The movie, which has already premiered to rave reviews at Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival, is based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.” The film documents one woman’s 1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe.
Southern Oregon is quickly becoming a premier film destination for Hollywood productions due to the wide variety of scenery, lack of sales tax, weather, and of course the incentives. Unlike other states’ programs, these incentives are cash rebates as opposed to tax credits. The Oregon Production Investment Fund offers qualifying film or television productions a 20% cash rebate on production-related goods and services paid to Oregon vendors and a 10% cash rebate of wages paid for work done in Oregon including both Oregon and non-Oregon residents. The labor portion of this rebate can be combined with the Greenlight Oregon program for an effective labor rebate of 16.2%. (A production must directly spend at least US $1 million in Oregon to qualify. There is no per production cap.) Most recently, Ashland was named best place to live as a filmmaker by MovieMaker Magazine. The pulled in the #1 spot in the “Town” category, which is reserved for cities with a population less than 100,000.
Local video production companies like Way West Media are helping support the growing local film industry by providing equipment rentals, crews, cameramen to both local and out-of-state productions. As more and more Hollywood productions discover the unique film locations in Oregon, expect to see more film crews and even catch a glimpse of an A-list celebrity!
